In 2008, UK Facebook user Jemma Rogers registered for the site using the pseudonym Jemmaroid Von Laalaa. She did it to avoid unwanted friend requests, though she couldn’t have foreseen where her decision ultimately ended up: her decision to change her actual name to match her fake one.

It all started when Facebook locked her out of her account for using the fake name. She begged and pleaded with the site to explain her reasoning for using a fake name, but nothing worked. So instead of giving in and changing her Facebook name to match her given name, Rogers did the opposite and changed her real name to “Jemmaroid Von Laalaa.” And her extreme efforts still haven’t been rewarded; all she has heard back from Facebook is that the site will “look into” her situation despite the fact that she has provided documentation.

“I know I’ve been a completely moron, but Facebook are being ridiculous,” Rogers said. “They should be able to tell it’s a genuine account but just under a fake name, I can’t believe I am being punished like this… I’ve been locked out of my account for five weeks now and have lost all of my photos, messages and precious memories.”

Even though it’s a crazy way to fight Facebook’s real name policy, Rogers’ efforts show just how far some users will go to preserve their anonymity on the site.
