When Facebook was first created, it made sense for the platform to invite users to share their personal information. After all, it was a small site used exclusively to connect with people the user already knew. However, times have changed, and the company has since exploded in scale while facing countless privacy scandals. That’s why, beginning December 1, Facebook will remove several categories of sensitive information from users’ profiles, including religious views, political views, sexual preference, and addresses.

“As part of our efforts to make Facebook easier to navigate and use, we’re removing a handful of profile fields: Interested In, Religious Views, Political Views, and Address,” Meta spokesperson Emil Vazquez told Gizmodo. “We’re sending notifications to people who have these fields filled out, letting them know these fields will be removed. This change doesn’t affect anyone’s ability to share this information about themselves elsewhere on Facebook.”

Facebook has previously landed in water for using some of these categories to target advertising, so it makes sense why it would want to remove them entirely. The company is also trying to convince users that it’s a guardian of their privacy. This is a very tiny step toward accomplishing that goal, but the less of our information that Facebook collects, the better.
