Report: Facebook Will Begin Deprioritizing Political Content In Users’ News Feeds

Facebook is often criticized for the way that its algorithm promotes content in users’ News Feeds. Too often, inflammatory speech and misinformation bubbles to the top simply because it drives more engagement. However, this past February, Facebook announced a new plan to curb this issue by limiting the amount of political content that appears in our feeds. And now, according to the company, the move went so well that it plans to roll out this feature around the world.

According to a report in Axios this week, Facebook will begin to “de-emphasize political posts and current events content in the News Feed based on negative user feedback.” The social media giant “also plans to expand tests to limit the amount of political content that people see in their News Feeds to more countries outside of the US.”

Ideally, this change will cut off traffic to sites that intentionally promote false and incendiary content to drive engagement. However, Facebook could also face accusations of censorship for silencing political speech, so it needs to tread carefully. As usual with the company, no matter what decision it makes, it’s certain to irritate a large share of its users.
